“I’m still buzzing!” says Scottish Nationals champion Fiona

Fiona Hughes wasn’t expecting to win gold in the women’s singles at the Scottish Nationals last weekend – not to mention the medals she picked up across the doubles categories – and she hasn’t yet come down from the high.

“Honestly, I’m still buzzing!” she told Pickleball 52. “My body’s definitely feeling the effects, but I’m just so chuffed with how I performed. Taking gold in singles and two silvers in doubles really made all the hard work feel worth it. It’s still sinking in a bit, but I’m really proud.”

She beat Lucy Elliott in the final, 15-5, to take gold, and partnered Sophie Robinson to silver in the women’s doubles and Jack Allison to silver in the mixed.

She can’t quite put her feet up, though – she has a charity event to organise before she can go on holiday.

“I’ll be taking some well-earned rest and letting everything settle,” she says.

And then it’ll be straight back on court with some more titles to chase.

“I’ll be wrapping up the season with the Southside Smashers in the Scottish Pickleball Premier League, then looking ahead to the Welsh Open in September. I’m also on the lookout for one more tournament to round out the year – so we’ll see where that takes me!”
