Pickleball Wales recently enjoyed an unusual visit – behind bars.
Chair Paul Byron was approached by Sam Field of His Majesty’s Prison Service and invited to take part in a mini-tournament at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, contested by mostly prison staff from Berwyn, Werrington, Feltham, Long Lartin and North Sea Camp.
And Paul, director Susan Evans, and Anglesey Pickleball Club players Paul
Semple and Siân Burgess headed over to take part, joined by Pickleball England country rep for Bedfordshire Trudie Ellis, with Pickleball Wales providing nets and balls for the tournament.
Paul tells us: “The competition was structured on a pairs basis, with three groups of in a round robin format with the top two from each group and two best runners-up qualifying for the knockout stages.”
Paul and Susan were eventual winners, and he adds: “The tournament was played in the true spirit of the game which was a true delight to see.
“For Pickleball Wales this was a wonderful opportunity for networking and to promote the sport within Wales.”
