Vibrant and special: inaugural UK Deaf Open Pickleball Festival

The inaugural UK Deaf Open Pickleball Festival took place in Loughborough at the weekend – with more than 100 people taking part.

The event was organised and hosted by Deaf-led charity Action Deafness, with ambassador James Townsend playing a key role, and was sponsored by SignLive.

“We welcomed over 100 deaf participants, and I have to admit, I’m left incredibly proud and utterly exhausted in the best way possible!” James told Pickleball 52.

“What made it so special was the sheer joy everyone experienced. We created a safe, fun, and inclusive space where people could try pickleball for the first time. The energy was electric — full of laughter and genuine connection. It was heartwarming to see so many people catching up, inspiring one another, and discovering a new passion for the sport.”

Craig Crowley, CEO of Deaf-led charity Action Deafness, reflected: “It was simply amazing to see everyone having a fantastic time at the UK Deaf Open Pickleball Festival. The vibrant atmosphere and enthusiastic participation among Deaf picklers was incredible.”

He also highlighted the team of coaches Julie Mac, Bryan Whalley and Stewart Hamblin as well as the other volunteers who made the weekend possible.

“We’re so thrilled with how it’s unfolded,” added Craig, “and we can’t wait to build on this momentum for future annual festivals.”

Plans are already under way for next year, and James said: “I’m feeling incredibly optimistic about what’s next and can’t wait to organise more events like this in the future!”
